Cardiff hosts not only the Singer of the World contest, but also the biennial
BBC Voice of Musical Theatre competition, which this week threw up a surprise
(and rather unworthy) winner in the form of an American falsettist. The finalist
who should have won was New Zealand tenor Tim Beveridge, whose swashbuckling
charisma and impeccable artistry put him head and shoulders above the rest of
the competition. So catch him instead on his own debut-disc, which begins with
'On the Street Where You Live', continues through a dazzling series of timeless
hits, and concludes with 'Music of the Night' (yes, Beveridge is the Kiwi
Phantom). Sooner or later, this boy is going to hit it big: get hold of this
record, on which he is supported by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and
remember that you read it here first.
